Gourmet Coffee

Thank you, discerning readers, for taking the time to read, and share, this painstakingly researched and vetted guide.

Please accept the following recommendations for what they are intended to be: gentle opinions for the well-versed, and polite guidelines for the uninitiated. It is the hope of everyone who contributed to this article that you'll find these notes helpful as we all continue our quest for the consummate epicurean experience.   Let us begin.

Consider your flame.   It should be still, kindled in a windless room which, ideally, is appointed in old-growth oak.  The candle, never scented, needn't be handmade but you should endeavor to source quality wax. Egyptian is best.  Failing that, anything Mediterranean.  If forced into domestic markets, do make an effort to locate a supplier from the Northeast, the nearer the coastline, the better.  When lit, it should be with a single hickory match.

Ideally silver, it can be forgiven if the spoon is pewter.  The inevitable scorching of its underside is the lament of many a careful connoisseur, but the character of the experience is often enhanced by the broad, level warming enabled with a thin layer of carbon.  So long as the vessel had been polished when new, preferably with a bit of beaver pelt or mid-century velvet, the gently curved bowl of a finely crafted utensil can only be enhanced by its subsequent patina.

There are few components of the apparatus as personal as the tourniquet.  Although it's composition has less to do with the effectiveness of the preparation than any other variable, it's important that the strap, the étreinte de larmes, to aficionados, be comfortable and appropriate to the occasion.  You'd no sooner display an old belt than you would knotted twine or an segment of snipped extension cord were you to engage your ritual in public, do not allow yourself that laziness in the privacy of your home.

More shoddy materials may be forgiven if notable for antiquity or lineage.   A former acquaintance once prized a quite pedestrian segment of surgical tubing, seldom intimating that it had once belonged to William S. Burroughs.

If you are starting from scratch, you could do far worse than a narrow expanse of kangaroo leather, worked and maintained periodically with mineral oil.

Some will go to the effort and expense of outfitting themselves with all due care of the items previously mentioned without seeing fit to avail themselves of a quality, reusable syringe. Intimacy and familiarity with an instrument that has been patiently selected and maintained with due care will reward its user with faithful and fulfilling service.

The consensus for years had been that the product of any traditional German manufacturer was preferable to even the best efforts of any newer, technology-driven companies that have emerged in the recent years. However, there has been considerable movement in the community in response to the unveiling of the stainless steel ÄlvaTand, a recent offering from the Förvirrad corporation, headquartered in Gothenburg.   Tipped adventurously with Yamaha Steel Ghost needles, finding just the right vein needn't be the flagrant chore of the common street junkie.

The sacred, small and divine gestures we practice in exultation to ourselves should be treated as slight and lithe embodiment of the beings we strive to be and, deep within, know we actually are. Good luck to you, and to all of us, in our pursuit to add dignity and refinement to our crippling chemical dependency.

And THAT!

THAT is what you sound like when you criticize people for using single-serve brewing cups.

Knock it off.
